“Twenty-five years ago, when Anwar Khan co-founded Islamic Relief USA, he was inspired by the compassionate verses from the 107th chapter of the Qur’an (Surah al-Ma’un):

Have you seen the one who rejects faith?

That is the one who drives away the orphan,

and does not encourage feeding the poor.

So woe to those who pray, but are heedless of their prayer—

those who make show (of their deeds), yet withhold simple assistance

The title of this chapter of the Qur’an, al-Maun, is an Arabic term that means “small kindness” or “simple assistance.” The chapter reminds readers of the value—and necessity—of sharing small kindnesses with others who we live with on Earth. Faith must equal action, and our actions should be rooted in compassionate, merciful love that relieves suffering and improves lives.
